Why Unrestricted Support Matters During Times of Uncertainty or Crisis

Insights From Martha Trombley Oakes, Director of Philanthropy

One of the most common questions I hear lately is, “How can I best support the causes and organizations that matter most to me amid uncertainty in federal funding?”

It’s an important question—one that doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all answer.

We are working with our partners to be able to answer that question for you on a case-by-case basis, but can offer these general thoughts for your consideration:

Give Unrestricted Support

One of the most impactful ways you can help right now is by making an unrestricted gift. Unlike donations earmarked for specific programs or initiatives, unrestricted funds allow nonprofits the flexibility to allocate resources where they are needed most. This could mean:

  • Keeping essential staff in place to ensure continuity of services
  • Covering unexpected costs due to changes in funding streams
  • Responding quickly to urgent needs in their communities
  • Strengthening overall organizational resilience during uncertain times

With recent federal decisions introducing uncertainty around funding, many organizations are facing new challenges as they work to continue their services. A donation without restrictions allows them to respond where the need is greatest, ensuring they can remain effective and sustainable.

How do I know my gift is unrestricted?

When donating online or by mail, look for an option that specifies how the gift will be used. If there’s a dropdown menu or a checkbox for “General Support,” “Where Needed Most,” or “Unrestricted Gift,” selecting that option ensures flexibility for the organization.

Avoid Specifying a Purpose in the Memo Line

If you donate by check, leaving the memo line blank (or writing “general support”) ensures the organization can apply the funds where they’re needed most. Writing something specific—like “for scholarships” or “for housing assistance”—may restrict how the nonprofit can use your gift.

Extending Grace

Many nonprofits are operating under heightened stress right now. If the annual report you usually receive is delayed or an email goes unanswered, know these organizations are navigating an evolving landscape. A little patience and understanding go a long way.

The generosity of our community makes a difference every day. Our greatest strength lies in our connections with one another. By standing with the organizations you care about—offering your trust, patience, and flexible support—you help ensure their work can continue.

Yours,
Martha
