The Curtis Fund

The Curtis Fund’s mission has not changed since it was established more than 100 years ago—providing educational scholarships to Vermont students pursuing a postsecondary education, aiming to level the playing field so that every Vermonter has a chance to obtain the education they need, regardless of family background, income level, or birthplace.

A supporting organization is a separate entity that operates under the foundation’s umbrella, benefiting from its resources, infrastructure, and administration. Aligned with VCF’s mission to enhance the quality of life in Vermont, these organizations have their own Board of Directors who make the grant and investment decisions.

What administrative and financial services does the VCF provide to supporting organizations?

We offer a range of administrative and financial services, including incorporation assistance, regulatory compliance, coordination of board meetings, maintenance of records and corporate books, accounting and bookkeeping services, grant check preparation, gift processing, due diligence on prospective grantees, coordination of annual financial audits, preparation of IRS tax returns, and liability insurance management.

How does the VCF support the development of vision, mission, and grantmaking strategies for supporting organizations?

We collaborate with the board to develop vision, mission, and grantmaking strategies. This includes creating grant guidelines, handling inquiries from prospective grantees, participating in relevant programs and conferences, and communicating insights to inform philanthropic strategies and tactics.

What services are provided to facilitate the grantmaking process?

The Foundation assists in developing the grantee inquiry and application process, coordinates meetings and site visits with grantees, prepares final proposal dockets for board consideration, and produces grant and gift history reports.
