What does it mean to be a good citizen?
Since 2018, the Good Citizen Challenge has been helping Vermont kids discover the answer the same way thriving communities always have; by showing up, pitching in, and getting involved. Created by Cathy Resmer of Seven Days, the Challenge invites Vermont students in grades K–8 to explore their communities, learn about local government, understand how news works, and spot reliable information, while finding ways to help others.

Each summer, young Vermonters work through a list of activities, from visiting their town hall and interviewing local officials to raising money for a neighbor in need or designing “Future Voter” stickers for election day.
The Vermont Community Foundation (VCF), with support from its fundholders and donors, has been part of the Good Citizen Challenge since its launch and looks forward to welcoming the class of 2026.
The partnership reflects a shared belief that civic life in Vermont grows stronger when people understand how their communities work and feel connected to one another. The program helps young people build that connection early.
“The Good Citizen Challenge is one of my favorite programs,” said VCF President and CEO Dan Smith. “When Cathy first came to us with the idea, we immediately saw how powerful it could be. It gives young Vermonters a reason to show up, stay engaged, and contribute to their communities. Those habits, practiced early, are what sustain communities over time.”
Each year, participants who complete the full challenge are named Distinguished Citizens and recognized at the Vermont Statehouse.

On Thursday, March 12, 2026, the 2025 class of Distinguished Citizens traveled to Montpelier to be celebrated.
As part of that recognition, students spent the day at the Statehouse for a behind-the-scenes look at Vermont’s government in action. They met with state leaders, talked with reporters who cover the legislature, had a private tour, and observed lawmakers at work. The day concluded with a special moment on the House floor, where the students were formally recognized for completing the Good Citizen Challenge.
If you know a young person who might want to join the Challenge this summer, you can sign up to receive updates for the 2026 program at goodcitizenvt.com.
